How to crochet - Single crochet

Single crochet (sc) is a basic construction stitch. It is used regularly in most crochet project. You can form a 3D crochet construction (e.g. amigurumi toy) by increase or decrease the number of single crochet stitches in a round.

1st round of single crochet

For most amigurumi toy projects, you would begin with a chain(ch 2), then follow with the 1st round of single crochet, this is how you do it:

Begin with 2 chains (ch2).
Hold the end and the yarn
with your left hand,
and hook with your right hand.
Insert the hook into the 1st chain.
Using finger from your left hand,
bring yarn over the hook.
Pull yarn through the chain.
Two loops remain on the hook.
Yarn over the hook.
Pull the yarn through
the two loops on the hook.
Here we have our
1st single crochet stitch!

Insert the hook again in the 1st chain.
(see the hole in the top pic)
Yarn over the hook.
Draw yarn through the chain.
Two loops remain on the hook.

Yard over the hook and pull through
the two loops on the hook.
Repeat the same process for
the required number of stitches.

Single crochet (sc) continues....

For the second round of stitches, you often need to increase the number of stitches according to the pattern. E.g. making 2 sc in the same stitch:

Insert the hook in the 1st stitch
of the previous round.

Yarn over the hook,
draw the yarn through the 1st stitch.
2 loops remain on the hook.

Yarn over the hook,
and pull through the
2 loops on the hook.
Repeat the same process for
the required number of stitches

How to increase stitches?

If you are crocheting in a round, you would see this kind of instructions in a pattern- "2 sc in each sc around (12 sts)", it means you have to create 2 single crochet stitches in each of the stitches of the previous round. As you crochet around and around, it will form a continuous spiral.
